Q&A
Subject: Ear Horns
From: LD
I'm doing some research on the history of hearing instruments and was wondering when people stopped using ear horns in this country as hearing aids. It seems to me they were used well into the 20th century, but I can't find much online history about hearing instruments. Thanks, LD, Atlanta, GA
Guess what? They are still in use and are included in various catalogues. For further information on their history, you might contact one of the medical museums. I own an antique "traveling ear trumpet." It collapses for easy packing. I got additional information on its age and probable history from the museum associated with the Medical College in Richmond, Virginia. You used to be able to purchase "up to date models" from Assistive device catalogs or through your local audiologist. You will be amazed at how very expensive they are!!! PS: They really work.

PPS: We have discovered that none of our catalog sources still sell Ear Horns. I guess there wasn't enough demand. We have found them on E-BAY from time to time, and you might find them in you local antique store.
