Subject: Menieres syndrome

My husband was diagnosed with menieres disease and in l985 had a endomatic? shunt put in his ear, which left him completely deaf in his right ear. Are there any vitamins or herbs that can help him preserve any hearing that he has left and stop the roaring and ringing in his ear. He has really tried everything and has been very depressed. Thanks

I am so sorry your husband is having such a time of it. The ringing is probably related to the damage which was unavoidably caused to his auditory nerve. I don't know of any herbs or medications that can take it away. I have heard that low sodium diets and the avoidance of some foods like tomatoes and chocolate can reduce the symptoms. There is an excellent clinic at the University of Maryland in Baltimore, Maryland, which specializes in the reduction of the stress caused by that unrelenting head noise (tinnitus).
